The Wild Road (Tag, the Cat #1)
Secure in a world of privilege and comfort, the kitten Tag is happy as a pampered house pet--until the dreams come. Dreams that pour into his safe, snug world from the wise old cat Majicou: hazy images of travel along the magical highways of the animals, of a mission, and of a terrible responsibility that will fall on young Tag. Armed with the cryptic message that he must bring the King and Queen of cats to Tintagel before the spring equinox, Tag ventures outside.
But had ancient Majicou somehow misjudged? Tag barely knows his own backyard and is scarely equipped for a quest out into the wide world! But ready or not, Tag is catapulted into the unknown to face danger and win allies in the wily urban fox Loves a Dustbin, and the far-seeing magpie One for Sorrow. Along the way, others will join their quest: Cy, the strange little tabby; Sealink, the globe-trotting cat with an eye for a handsome tom; and Mousebreath, wise in the ways of the world. Together, this band of frightened yet courageous animals will brave the wild road to seek the King and Queen.
But finding the royal pair is only half the challenge, as an evil human known only as the Alchemist doggedly pursues the Queen for hisown ghastly ends. For the Queen, a descendant of the legendary line of Golden Cats, holds the key to an ancient prophecy that foretells enormous power for those who control this rare and extraordinary breed.
And if the Alchemist achieves his goal, the world can never be safe again.
A stunning literary achievement, "The Wild Road" is a sweeping feat of the imagination, an amazing mystical highway to an unseen place known only to cats and their chosen, trusted companions.

The world of cats exists along side our world but it is still impacted by the world of humans, usually not in a good way. Tag the cat is pulled from his comfortable life as a pampered house cat into an adventure and a quest. He picks up traveling companions and grows from young and naive to mature along the way. A brilliant unique story full of loveable characters who grow and develop as the as it progresses, told by a man who knows cats. And lord knows I do love man who knows a thing or two about cats.
Great characters, interesting story and a happy ending
The Wild Road is a wonderfully magical read. I had seen it described as 'Watership Down, but with cats' and while I can certainly see why, I would say this story branches off in so many different tangents and has so many different elements to it as a result, that it really becomes a case of apples and oranges (or, of course, cats and rabbits!).Out of all the cats, I found myself most drawn towards Sealink, with her southern drawl and her lioness-like protectiveness and affection.I am sad to
I'm not normally a fan of books where an animal is the POV character, so 3 stars is a lot coming from me. King creates enjoyable characters and I was pleased to discover the character's actually go through some growth along their journey. I also like King's ability to to remember at all times that his characters are cats and not allow them to become too human. This was a difficult book to rate. Parts of it were almost lyrical in their beauty; others were gritty and revolting. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR YOUNGER READERS BECAUSE OF THE ANIMAL CRUELTY DEPICTED. In the end, I decided on a 4-star rating because the book is memorable. There were numerous typographical errors, possibly due to transcription from hard-copy to digital. In most cases, I could tell what the proper word should probably be, but "ruseating column" baffled me. No onlineYES GOOD WATERSHIP DOWN WITH CATS. MAGICAL CATS. THAT ACTUALLY ACT LIKE CATS.
