This was my first encounter with the Sacketts and with Louis L'Amour. I'd always turned my pert little Irish nose up at discussions had by family about this author. Many delved deeply in their persuasive talents in order to convince me of fantastic ROI as it related to Mr. L and his books. . . .and now, I've been bitten. I'm seeking more, at least more about the Sacketts who seem to be a tribe of superhero-mountain-men types.Echo Sackett is in her early teens and knows her way around guns,

Well this is the second book I have read by this author, and if the books were not free gifts I never would have read the first and definitely not the second. However, the author did improve in this second installation in both character development and story line. Ride the river is about a young girl traveling alone across a few states back in the day (late 1800's early 1900's) and complications which can arise in such situations. Goodreads characterizes this novel, set in 1840, as the fifth volume in the author's Sackett series. The fictional Sackett family, in L'Amour's writings, are descended from tough, larger-than-life Barnabas Sackett, who emigrated to America in the 1600s and settled on the frontier, and who laid down a law for his descendants that whenever a Sackett was in trouble, the rest were bound to lend their aid. This book is indeed about a Sackett, and no doubt chronologically the fifth in that sequence.

This is a refreshing adventure that pits a small Sackett female against a bunch of big men a couple of decades before the Civil War. Neither city slickers nor run-of-the-mill woodsmen are going to steal from this mountain girl. Hardest thing about this story is finding a break in the action long enough so that you can put it down! (I've read it 6 times since it was published in 1983.)

Echo Sackett is a caution. I chuckled at the way L'Amour allows her to slip back and forth between proper English and backwoods slang. It is a rare thing for this author to have a female lead character, but it comes off well. There is the added attraction of the Chantrys getting involved. Finian going to the rougher part of town was a delight. There is lots of action, no real character development, a little philosophy about family and history, a love story, and the appearance of some Clinch

Guys, Ive found it. If youre wanting a western with a female main character who is not turned so gruff you cannot feel for her then this is it. Echo is one of my new favorite characters and I love her. This book was action packed, had a subtle (and adorably hilarious) romance, and a fantastic main character. Have I mentioned that I love Echo?

An easy and enjoyable readThe pace and tempo of the action keeps you reading. As always L. GLamour delivers. There is never a bad read with Louis.
