Explanation To Books Tales of the Astonishing Black Spark

Trapped in a dead-end job in his Ohio hometown, watching the girl of his dreams move on to a glamorous new life in a big city—Donald McDougal’s aimlessness has held him back for a long time. When a lightning strike grants him superhuman powers, he jumps at his chance to finally be somebody. But the new abilities and the pursuit of superheroic fame come with a price tag, and it may not be one he can afford.

This wry debut is at once a fanboy’s homage to the history of superhero storytelling in America and a keen-eyed satire of those same stories, raising questions about race and privilege that are becoming impossible to ignore.

Criticize About Books Tales of the Astonishing Black Spark
This is a science fiction/fantasy title in the genre of comic book superhero novelizations except that it is written by the Black Spark himself (Donald McDonald) in first person as if he were telling you a story on the bus. I found this book a change of pace from your typical SF/F titles because it is written tongue-in-cheek and mostly makes fun of itself. I enjoyed the novel and found the characters engaging and exciting, particularly the Black Spark himself.Ronald McDonald, first of all, is

Tales of the Astonishing Black Spark by Charlie J. Eskew is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late August.Nerdy McNerdingtons, right off the bat. The Astonishing Black Spark of Ohio, aka Donald, outfitting himself, daring-do's, helpful friends, balancing good and bad press, and interacting/besting/romancing with other newly-found heroes.

As someone who has never read a comic book and has only the most basic knowledge of popular superheroes, I was not sure what to expect from this book. Fortunately, the plot was consistently engaging, and I found the narrator funny and relatable. Im a former resident of Columbus, Ohio so I caught on to a lot of the sometimes thinly veiled references to local places. (Also, thank you, Spark, for saying something nice about the open mic poets.) Im also familiar with NYC, so that was another way I

Charlie J. Eskew is an author from Columbus, OH.

This debut novel from Eskew is super fun for the geeks out there with plenty of deep references to sci-fi and fantasy culture. The book points to tropes from the history of superhero stories while adding a fresh, 'woke' twist by working through those tropes with a Black main character. For the social justice focused geeks out there, this books is RIGHT up your alley. If you are neither a geek nor all that aware of the world around us in the States right now, I think you can still enjoy this

Imagine your funny, fallible, deeply geeky friend is stuck by lightning and gets superpowers... and well, wrote you a book about it. In this debut, Eskew takes you along with his hero as he stumbles through what it takes to be a superhero, without falling into the well-trod traps of being overly idealistic or, alternately, super gritty. This hero doesn't always make super choices, and faces real life consequences from events as large as stopping a supervillain, or as small as eating all his

4.5 starsI would rate this as 4, but I want to bump it up for a few reasons - one, uniqueness to me. I've never read a novel about a superhero. What a delight. Two, it was easy to read, and I knew going in that this was the author's first novel [as far as I know], so I'm just darn impressed. And three, I just really liked it and I'd like everyone to read it please so we can talk about it.The cover itself shares some of what the core of the novel is going to be: a Black superhero struggles to be
