The Spellman Files (The Spellmans #1)
Part Nancy Drew, part Dirty Harry, Izzy walks an indistinguishable line between Spellman family member and Spellman employee. Duties include: completing assignments from the bosses, aka Mom and Dad (preferably without scrutiny); appeasing her chronically perfect lawyer brother (often under duress); setting an example for her fourteen-year-old sister, Rae (who's become addicted to "recreational surveillance"); and tracking down her uncle (who randomly disappears on benders dubbed "Lost Weekends").
But when Izzy's parents hire Rae to follow her (for the purpose of ascertaining the identity of Izzy's new boyfriend), Izzy snaps and decides that the only way she will ever be normal is if she gets out of the family business. But there's a hitch: she must take one last job before they'll let her go -- a fifteen-year-old, ice-cold missing person case. She accepts, only to experience a disappearance far closer to home, which becomes the most important case of her life.
Just to make one thing clear--I read this book, I didn't listen to the audio CD, but goodreads didn't have the hardback book (?!). Amazon has done this to me too...I'm confused, and unlike some I'm not a fan of audiobooks, so it irks me. Enough of this tangent though--on to the review. The Spellman Files could have been fantastic! The setup was smart and right up my alley--family of private investigators who snoop on each other more than on strangers. Like The Thin Man, the dialogue was
I can't decide if I want to give this four or five stars....I loved the book.. I loved Isabelle's voice and commentary.. And Christina Moore's narration was perfect <3I am going to re-listen soon/right away I think, maybe? I don't know?I can't think right now because motorised gardening implements >_<
This book wont work for some, but head into it in the right frame of mind and its a fun ride, a modern screwball comedy crossed with spy caper, Harriet the Spy meets Claire DeWitt and the City of the Dead.Isabel is a private investigator in the family business, Spellman Investigations. Its been a hard road getting there after a decade of childish rebellion. Since David [her brother] had cornered the market on perfection, I had to settle for mining the depths of my own imperfection. The Spellmans are one of the most unconventional dysfunctional families ever in a book, and they are hilarious. They are outrageous and over the top and have very peculiar ways of showing love. This delightful book is really, really funny, if you have a weird sense of humor, which I guess I do. It is interesting that what Id consider disturbing and child abuse in real life can, in a book, cause me to feel affection for all of the characters and send me into frequent peals of laughter. The friend
Boring storyline and writing style, annoying characters, pathetic, totally irritating 'heroine'.Not recommended.
If youre looking for a diversion from serious literature and you like quirky characters, The Spellman Files may be your thing. I certainly liked it well enough. Isabel Izzy Spellman is 28, and still lives at home with her family of private investigators. Shes no angel and the others have their faults too. Its not a peaceful abode. No one hesitates to slash anothers tires to keep them from running house arrest. Things get serious when the youngest daughter, Rea, goes missing, and the family has

Description In Pursuance Of Books The Spellman Files (The Spellmans #1)
Meet Isabel "Izzy" Spellman, private investigator. This twenty-eight-year-old may have a checkered past littered with romantic mistakes, excessive drinking, and creative vandalism; she may be addicted to Get Smart reruns and prefer entering homes through windows rather than doors -- but the upshot is she's good at her job as a licensed private investigator with her family's firm, Spellman Investigations. Invading people's privacy comes naturally to Izzy. In fact, it comes naturally to all the Spellmans. If only they could leave their work at the office. To be a Spellman is to snoop on a Spellman; tail a Spellman; dig up dirt on, blackmail, and wiretap a Spellman.Part Nancy Drew, part Dirty Harry, Izzy walks an indistinguishable line between Spellman family member and Spellman employee.
